Our charity cause this year is related to the only wooden church in Bulgaria – the Church of the Transfiguration in Borovets.
Rotary Club Sofia-Balkan is raising funds that will be used for the installation of a heating system, urgent repair work, artistic lighting from the outside, and beautification of the space around the church.

The church was built at the initiative of famous and influential public figures, scientists, and residents of Samokov and the Chamkoria region.
The funds for its construction were collected through voluntary donations and gifts (even King Boris III contributed), and the project began in the distant year of 1933.
The project was designed by the renowned Bulgarian architect Nikola Lazarov, and the wooden church was built in an original Gothic Alpine style. This gives it a unique character, uncommon among other Orthodox churches in Bulgaria, but it also creates a wonderful harmony between the building and its surrounding environment.
On September 23, 1934, the church was solemnly consecrated by Exarch Stefan, and it has been renovated several times since then. Before 1988, the church was almost abandoned, but thanks to Yordan Hristov (a self-taught woodcarver) and pious Christians, it underwent a comprehensive renovation in just two years and was restored to its former beauty.
The church’s holiday is on August 6 – the Transfiguration of the Lord, and one of the most interesting and valuable items, which most churchgoers do not pay attention to, is the donation box from 1825.
